What To Expect

Modern Adventures are designed to showcase the best of a destination, and promote community, sharing and celebration. We thoughtfully curate all elements for an immersive, diverse experience—but you'll still have some free time to relax and soak in the atmosphere.

The French Alps Experience

Soaring cliffs, remote Alpine villages, luxurious mountain inns, and unparalleled adventure—get ready for an unforgettable 12-day exploration of the French Alps alongside Outside editor Tasha Zemke. We'll explore some of the world’s premier hiking trails, hike through sparsely populated valleys, and also get a taste of village life in the Alps.

This is a fully supported hike led by experienced local guides. We will be transported by vehicle to the trekking starting point each day, and at the end of the day’s hike to lodge or hotel for the evening. Our nights are spent at elegant, comfortable lodges and hotels. We carry lightweight day packs, while the rest of our gear is transferred between accommodations.

This trek is accessible for most age levels who maintain good physical fitness, have previous hiking experience, and are prepared for the demands of hiking in remote areas. Each day we walk 5 to 8 hours, with elevation gains between 1,500 and 4,000 feet. We stick mostly to established trails, at times making use of off-piste routes.

Activity Level: Moderate

This trek is accessible for most age levels who maintain good physical fitness, have previous hiking experience, and are prepared for the demands of hiking in remote areas. We'll cover just over 100 miles in total, each day hiking 5 to 7 hours with daily elevation gains between 1,500 and 4,000 feet. We stick mostly to well-maintained paths, but sometimes go off trail, and conquer wind, snow, rain and sunny skies—sometimes all in the same day.

Your physical conditioning should start no later than two months prior to our trip departure. Your regimen should include walking or hiking in the boots you intend to wear with your loaded 60-liter backpack (see Gear & Packing for more details).

How We Eat & Special Dietary Needs

We’ll have gourmet picnic lunches on the trails, with breakfast and dinner at village restaurants. There is no alcohol included in this adventure. Alcohol may be available for purchase at dinner which you are welcome to purchase at your own expense.

Traveling with dietary restrictions or allergies can be a challenge, but we’re here to help. Prior to your departure, we’ll send you a questionnaire where you can inform us of any special dietary needs you have. Depending on the information you give us, we will work with our Alaska partners to adjust menus and be aware of allergies and restrictions on our trip. We kindly request that any changes to our menu are based on need rather than preference, as we work very hard to curate an exceptional dining experience that is difficult to change.
